Fringed Free Standing Lace Bookmarks

For the 5x7” hoop & 4x4” hoop

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

These files are to be stitched on water soluble stabiliser such as Badgemaster/Vilene/Ultra Solvy.

Use 40wt thread machine embroidery thread in the bobbin as well.

Tip: Do not change the bobbin thread when stitching the fringe – colour two and you will get a lovely two-tone fringe.

Tip: With the smaller lettering on the longer words, I would recommend using strongly contrasting colours as they will show up the smaller letters better.

Tip:  There are jump threads between the letters.  To make the cutting of these jump threads easier, before stitching the lettering you could add a scrap of water soluble stabiliser under/on top of your hoop as it will make it easier to pick up the jump thread without catching the lace underneath.  You can use scraps of the thinner water soluble stabiliser you’d use on top of towels, it doesn’t have to be the same one as the one you are using in the hoop.

Cut/Trim the bottom edge of the fringe if desired.

Use colours of your choice.

The 5x7” version of the bookmark stitches out as one file and you can fit 3 in a 5x7” hoop.  The 2nd colour to stitch is the fringe.

The 4x4” version is slightly smaller and is stitched out in two hoopings.  No additional sewing is required as the two parts are sewn together in the hoop.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR 4x4” BOOKMARK

Firstly locate the file marked “bookmark part 1 4x4”.  Stitch this file out first as follows.

Hoop up your machine with water soluble stabiliser.  One or more layers depending on type.  Although there are 2 colours to the file, you only need to use the one colour.  Either use the same or a contrasting colour thread in the bobbin.

Stitch out the first colour – this is what will be called the “placement line”

Stitch out the second colour – this is the fringe.

Remove hoop from machine, remove design from hoop and cut away some of the excess stabiliser as above.

Then move on to the file marked “xxxxxx bookmark part 2 4x4”.

Again hoop up your machine with water soluble stabiliser.

And stitch out the 1st colour which is the main part of the bookmark.

Next, the 2nd colour needs to be stitched out, you don’t need to change colour, but this is the placement line.  When the machine has stopped, trim the top thread and take your fringe piece and place it on top of the hoop, matching the placement lines.  Note how the fringe part hangs over the edge of the hoop.  I used low tack sticky tape to hold it in place and you may want to use extra sticky tape on the area around the bottom of the fringe to keep it out of the way. Stick it to the hoop or any excess stabiliser but not to the machine!!!  You will not be stitching over any part of the fringe apart from along the top edge where it meets the bookmark so it doesn’t matter if the tape is over the placement line.

Stitch out colour 3. Again there is no need to change colour as this is the outer outline around the edge of the bookmark.  As it stitches it catches in the fringe providing the fringe has been properly positioned using the positioning lines.

Finally stitch out any remaining colours.

Remove the completed design from the hoop.  If you intend to trim the fringe, then this is the best time I found to trim it. Take a pair of dressmaking scissors and trim away the bottom edge, just enough to release all the threads.

Carefully cut away the positioning lines of stitching from the side of the bookmark and cut or tear away any excess stabiliser.

Soak according to the manufacturer’s instructions to remove the water soluble stabiliser, leave to dry and press if necessary.
