I have found that this is the best method for sewing together boxes and baskets

Stitch each side piece to the base using a zigzag stitch.  Place each piece side by side to  stitch, creating a flat seam.

Then stitch together the side seams using a zigzag stitch as before.  I found it easier to start at the top of the box and stitch towards the base.
